Did Glasgow fall for Voi too quickly?

Two million rides later, Glasgow's e-bike revolution is facing its first major backlash. Could the council have seen it coming?

Happy Wednesday, readers! While I’m sure you’re all excitedly checking our socials to see whether we’re on target, how many new subscribers we have to go and where our print copy is, I thought we were overdue a reminder of how our campaign works.

For the next few weeks, new members can sign up for a paid subscription for just £2.99 a month. If 1,000 new members sign up, we’ll fulfil all five of our pledges. These are promises that you helped us craft — pledges we believe will make a real difference to the city.

We’re currently sitting at 532 new paying members, which, with just 11 days left to add 468, is quite scary.

That red bar haunts our dreams at the minute

But… positivity! We are over the halfway mark and we aren’t slowing down yet. It’s great to have so many of you onboard and we love meeting you guys when we are out handing papers out.

If you want to join the movement of over 500 people who are getting more out of Glasgow, sign up below

Did Glasgow fall for Voi too quickly?

Just four months ago, on 3 August, Councillor Lana Reid-McConnell was riding high after completing the Glasgow Way, a 100-mile route taking in every council ward, joined by her Scottish Greens colleague, Jon Molyneux. The pair undertook the route as a charity ride and finished it in 11 hours, swapping out traditional push bikes for e-bikes, as a specific nod to “Lana’s new passion for Voi”. Reid-McConnell was among the thousands who rediscovered cycling when the e-bikes arrived in Glasgow last year.

Glasgow deserves great journalism. You can help make it happen.

You’re halfway there, the rest of the story is behind this paywall. Join the Bell for full access to local news that matters, just £8.99 a month or annual deals with two months free.
