Dear readers, please join us in welcoming the 150 people aged 16 to 25 who joined us last week as part of a feel-good partnership with the Postcode Lottery who funded their subscriptions. Is that institutional recognition for The Bell? Maybe, but it coincides nicely with a special milestone.
That’s right, we’re not just celebrating Robbie’s birthday today (enjoy your day off, Robbo), but The Bell has officially turned two-years-old! 🎂 We’ll get into a few fun wee stats and share our favourite stories below.
Enjoy your Monday briefing.
Bowling green beef in G3
There’s a battle bubbling away in a Finnieston backstreet, as residents of St Vincent Crescent have until Friday to decide whether they support a community buyout of the local bowling green — once home to Corunna Bowling Club. The catch? It’ll now be much more expensive.
The green was valued at £250,000 when surveyed in December 2024. But, after a March meeting of the council’s planning committee, where councillors were “minded” to grant planning permission for 20 flats to be built on the site, the land is now valued at over ten times more — £2.9 million — according to local campaigners.
Calum reported on the backstory for the dispute last September. Many of Glasgow’s bowling clubs, in the face of falling membership, have opted to sell some or all of their green spaces to developers who want to build housing on the land. In some cases, as with Mount Florida Bowling Club and in the present case of Corunna, club members personally benefited from selling up (to the tune of tens of thousands of pounds).
