Big story: The Glasgow law centre of Hebridean cafe drama
There’s a storm brewing up north, where American Claire Kellerman is suing a volunteer-run community cafe on Bernera after they allegedly refused entry to her black and white dog earlier this year.
Representing Kellerman is Glasgow-based law firm the Ethnic Minorities Law Centre (EMLC). It is alleging discrimination against the Bernera Community Association (BCA), seeking £10,000 in damages. The community association has said the case could bankrupt them.
Kellerman claims on her LinkedIn profile (where she describes herself as “rippling beauty around the world”) to have moved to the isle of Great Bernera in July 2025, but that she has been subjected to repeated harassment on the island. She also states that the BCA charity had “co-created an environment of vile, intentional, targeted hostility and unwelcome for those who are disabled with Assistance [sic] dogs”.
Kellerman and the St Vincent Place-based charity previously pursued a separate community organisation called Bernera Community Development Trust (thinking it was responsible for the community cafe), seeking £7,000. However, they later admitted this was a mistake, according to the Stornoway Gazette.
